What is the Salah?

What is the Salah?

Salah (salat) is the Arabic term for the ritual prayer that is obligatory for Muslims to perform five times a day. It forms one of the five pillars of Islam.

The names of the five daily prayers are as follows:

Fajr (Morning)
This takes place at pre-dawn
Dhuhr (Noon)
This takes place just after the sun reaches its zenith
Asr (Evening)
This takes place between noon and sunset
Maghrib (Afternoon)
This takes place just after sunset
Isha (Night)
This takes place during the night/at night-time

Aside from the five obligatory prayers, Muslims may offer Sunnah and Nafl Salah.

The Sunnah Salah (prayers) are ones in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to habitually offer as voluntary worship at specified times and places.

Nafl Salah are voluntary prayers that a Muslim may offer at any time as a form of extra Ibadah (worship).

Why is Salah important?

Salah is an integral part of the lifestyle of a Muslim. Through prayer, Muslims are required each day to ponder on the verses of the Qur’an, the Shahadah (the declaration of faith), and Allah’s attributes.

Muslims across the world unite in prayer at five specified times each day in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, as a means of connecting to Allah and their purpose in life – to remember and worship Him.

Salah times are appointed to times of the day that depend on the position of the sun. Since parts of the world experience daylight and night differently, it is important to follow the prayer times where you are situated. An authority will usually gather and publish the prayer time in your area for the public’s ease.

The Muslim Guide

Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad about Salah.

Salah and Prophet Muhammad (saw)

  • When the time for the obligatory Salah (prayer) arrives, if a Muslim makes a good wudoo' and performs the Salah (prayer) in hushû' and complete the ruku', this Salah (prayer) will atone for his previous sins, unless he commits a grave sin. This is always the case.
  • Whoever prays (Salah) the two coolness prayers, Fajr and 'Asr, will enter Paradise.
  • Salah (Prayer) in congregation is twenty-seven degrees more virtuous than Salah (prayer) alone.
  • One who prays (Salah) 'Isha' in congregation is as if he had prayed (Salah) until midnight. If one prays Fajr in congregation, it is as if he prayed all night.
  • If people knew the virtues and rewards of Isha and Fajr Salah (prayers), they would definitely come to the mosque and the congregation, even if they were crawling.
  • On the Day of Judgment, the first deed for which a person will be held to account is his/her Salah (prayer). If his/her Salah (prayer) is correct, his business will go well and he will gain. If his/her Salahs (prayers) are not in order, he/she will lose and suffer loss. If anything is missing from his/her obligatory Salahs (prayers), his/her Lord, the Exalted and Exalted, will say: See if my servant has nafl Salahs (prayers). What is lacking in the obligatory Salahs (prayers) will be made up with nafil Salahs (prayers). Then he/she will be held to account for his/her other deeds in the same way.
  • Surely one of you speaks privately to his/her Lord while praying (Salah).
  • When a person leaves his house with the intention of going to the masjid for Salah (prayer), one step will earn him a good deed, and another step will erase one of his sins.
  • The key to Paradise is Salah (prayer) and the key to Salah (prayer) is wudu (ablution).
  • Allah does not accept Salah (prayer) without cleanliness.
  • Cleanliness is half of faith.
  • The head of the religion is Islam (surrendering to Allah by saying the Shahada) and the pillar is Salah (prayer).
  • The closest the servant is to his Lord is in the state of prostration in Salah (prayer). So pray a lot when you are in prostration.
  • He/she who continues to Salah (prayer) five times, observing the ruku', prostration, wudu' (ablution) and its timings, and who accepts that these five times of Salah (prayer) are a command from Allah, will enter Paradise.
Quran

"When you hear the adhan, repeat what the muezzin says word for word. Then recite salat-u salam to me.

(Allāhumma salli alā Muḥammadin wa-ali Muḥammad)
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the Progeny of Muhammad

Because whoever recites Salat-u-Salam to me,
Allah will have mercy on him tenfold."
